Thanks, Indie Business Blog for the fun tag party!
1. I don’t compromise my principals.
Working for an agency and for big corporations meant applying my talent and resources toward business agendas I didn’t believe in. Working with an Indie Business (and slowly developing my own) means that I choose what to fight for—and it feels good!
2. My office is at home.
With two kids under three, my time is very precious. No longer commuting or eating lunch at restaurants means that I spend my free time with my family. I can work in my pajamas or with spit-up in my hair. Or, if the weather is gorgeous and I really just want to be outside, I can sneak an afternoon off. I’m a happier mother, and I know that means I have happier kids.
3. I get to play with gorgeous essential oils.
A few years ago, I didn’t know what essential oils were. Now I have a great collection of them in one of my kitchen cupboards. Every time I open that cabinet I enjoy the unmistakable aroma of essential oils. The smell is comforting and pleasing, and it’s always a great reminder of the possibilities life throws at you.
4. I’m full of great (?) advice.
Learning about hand-crafted therapeutic products and the benefits of essential oils makes me “that chick” with the unsolicited advice. I don’t mind, because the response is almost always very positive. Can’t sleep? Sinuses plugged up? Trying to disinfect your kitchen counters? Chances are I have a suggestion involving the essential oils I now have the pleasure of working with.
5. When the kids are sick I don’t feel helpless.
Working with an indie business means I don’t have to stress out about having to drag my kids to doctor’s appointments. It means if I spent the night getting puked on, I don’t have to be somewhere at 9 am. Working under a Certified Aromatherapist also means that I have natural, safe treatment options to help my kids get through their cold symptoms.
6. I can interact with other Indie Business Owners.
It’s immensely satisfying to know that my business peers are creative, dynamic, hard-working men and women who have taken control of their lives and their businesses. Indie Business Owners work hard, but I think we have more fun! As a community, we think outside the box, know how to cut loose, and have a sense of social responsibility!
7. I’m inspired to take better care of the planet.
The more I learn about essential oils and healthy lifestyles, the more I understand my responsibility to the Earth. It isn’t always easy to live green, but it’s easier to keep my eye on that goal when I’m surrounded by healthy businesses and healthy examples.
8. I’m encouraged to learn.
I love to learn! Working with Aromahead and Aromatics International means that every day I learn more about aromatherapy and essential oils. Over the course of two years, I’ve gone from a newbie to a graduate of the Aromatherapy Certification Program. I read blogs I never read before, I pay attention to aromas and experiences I never noticed before, and I get to work with exciting web development teams who teach me more about marketing and technology.
9. It’s a great conversation piece.
Because indie business isn’t mainstream, a lot of people who do have mainstream careers require a lot of explanation. I’ve learned not to sound defensive when I’m explaining that aromatherapy isn’t just scented candles from Bath and Body Works. I’ve made new friends, encouraged old friends to try new things, and I’ve learned to be a better spokeswoman for what I believe in. In the last year alone, I’ve learned how to bake, knit, and blend essential oil products. All of these fun indie experiences help me interact with the people I love!
10. I can sleep at night.
In my business and personal life, I have the satisfaction of constantly creating things. Because work involves love and genuine inspiration, I don’t spend my evenings and nights stressing about meetings and coworkers and deadlines and all the shenanigans that often come with high stress mainstream jobs. My relaxed and happy state of mind allows me to work harder, smarter, and with much more creativity. And when I’m not working, I’m not thinking about work—I’m just enjoying my life.
I find all kinds of wonderful new beauty and bath products to buy and try out. And when I shop for gifts, I buy handmade items.
Now it’s your turn! I’m tagging:
