I love Spikenard essential oil (Nardostachys jatamansi).
Actually, I love all the oils made from roots of plants, and Spikenard is no exception. The roots of a plant anchor it into the soil and absorb water and nutrients vital to the plant’s growth.
Oils extracted from roots can support us in much the same way–especially through times of high anxiety, fear, and instability. Root oils can make us feel grounded, settled and calm. These oils give us an anchor and strength, helping us to absorb what we need. They provide a sense of stability and balance. Use root oils to combat feelings of panic, over-thinking, or worrying, and to relieve stress related to life changes and turmoil.
Spikenard essential oil calms the heart, relaxes the mind, reduces excessive thinking, and brings a peaceful feeling. Its aroma is unique, sweet, earthy, warm, and deep.
It has been used successfully to calm tachycardia (rapid heart beat). Try combining it with equal amounts of Ylang Ylang and applying the blend to the chest. Spikenard essential oil also has great antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory actions, and can be used to reduce pain–both emotionally and physically.
If you haven’t tried this oil, and you like the more earthy aromas, Spikenard would make a lovely addition to your essential oil collection. I often wear it as a perfume!
As an added benefit, it is a great bug repellent!
