Hi andrea. I’m so grateful and so delighted to have come across your website. I’m interested in furthering my knowledge of essential oils through aromatherapy, so that from sharing the knowledge, that I am learning through aromahead institute, will empower people about the power of essential oils to assist them on their life journey of health and well being. I love your genuine, heartfelt involvement in all that you do. I don’t know of any other aroma institutes who are dedicated like you are… Also, you mentioned that all essential oil companies get their oils basically from the same oil companies or from the same country or states. Just for my understanding, there’s an oil company by the name of Y L. I know they have lots of farms of there own so they as well are buying their oils from same companies as every other essential oil company?

Hi Marilyn – thank you so much for such a sweet comment! I really appreciate that; it makes my Monday go from good to great 🙂
I’m so glad to hear that you’re deepening your knowledge of essential oils too, that is wonderful to hear. You’ve come to the right spot!
Young Living does distill some of their own oils, and they also buy from distillers around the world.

In the book, is their recipes for cold/flu for children? I recently learned certain oils are not safe for children. Thank you!

Reply

Andrea Butje April 18, 2016 at 1:46 pm

Hi Shirley – yes, there are blends in the book that are good for cold and flu for children. I’d also recommend you check out two courses we have. The Intro to Essential Oils course is a great starter class (and it’s free!). In it, I go over safety for children. http://aromahead.com/courses/online/introduction-to-essential-oils

I also recommend you check out our 3-hour study, “How To Protect Your Family from Colds and Flu Using Essential Oils”. You’ll learn which essential oils you can use to prevent or recover from respiratory infections, why the oils work, and how to use them. It’s a crash course in keeping your family healthy! http://aromahead.com/courses/online/how-to-protect-your-family-from-colds-and-flu-using-essential-oils 🙂

Hi Andrea,
I want to make my very own trauma oil but have heard conflicting info about using St Johns Wort dried flowers vs wilted. I am told that the dried does not seem to be as potent for medicinal purposes and is best to use wilted flowers. Do you have an opinion on this? Also was wondering if many of the same recipes are in the ebook as in the Natural Living course, which I am currently taking and LOVING, or are there many more I could use from the ebook!? Thank you so much for all you do, you are so GREAT!

Reply

Andrea Butje April 18, 2016 at 1:43 pm

Hi Marnie – thanks so much for the sweet compliment, I really appreciate it!

Certain herbs are considered most potent when freshly wilted, such as lemon balm, St. John’s wort, mullein flowers, cleavers, and chickweed. They lose much of their potency if used in dried form for infusing into oil.

The recipes in the eBook are not found in the Natural Living course – the book is a sweet compliment to the class, but is really an introduction to recipes, most of which you will already know from the Natural Living course.

Hope this helps! 🙂

I’m trying to find out how to help my brother, he had a stroke a few years ago and not that I’m learning about essential oils I’m wanting to help him. He is cold all the time. We live in central NY. He really can’t taste unless it has hot sauce on it. His speech is still slow. One arm has lost it’s tone and just hangs there.

Hi there – I’m so sorry to hear that; it’s so difficult to see the people you love facing such hardships due to illness. Since I am not a medical professional, I won’t be able to give you any advice on using oils for such a serious condition. Oils can be used to increase energy levels and support stress reduction. I do believe that reducing stress and improving sleeping can be tremendously helpful and support the body to heal. some oils can be warming like cardamon and ginger, but they must be diluted well so they don’t cause skin irritation.

Hi Andrea, I have recently been diagnosed with diverticulitis. It is incredibly painful, I am just wondering if you know what oils would be best for topical application or diffusing when I am having a flare up? Or to assist with healing? Thank you so much! Have a blessed day!

Reply

Andrea Butje April 12, 2016 at 9:17 am

Hi Angie – I’m so sorry to hear that! For topical use, I would suggest a cream for your belly of 1 oz cream with 10 drops Roman Chamomile and 5 drops Lavender. You can also try peppermint and orange; in this case, I would do 2 oz. of unscented lotion or cream, 15 drops Orange, 6 drops Peppermint, and 15 drops of Roman Chamomile. Both of these blends will be very soothing. Hope this helps and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Dear Andrea,
I was wondering if you could help me in essential oil “brands”? As a massage therapist for 8 years I have been using mainly “lotus touch”, at which I love,, but I have been getting a lot of mixed info/comments , mainly about two main brands as to being the best out there/edible, when as far as I knew there wasn’t and FDA, etc.- for any essential oils?? How do I reply to clients?? any suggestions will help!! Blessings!

Reply

Andrea Butje March 30, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Hi Crystal! I do understand that this can be tricky since there are no regulations on oils. First, many companies purchase their oils from the same distillers, so to say one company has the “best” oils should be taken with a grain of salt. My main criteria when I buy oils is that the company imports directly from the distiller, every batch of oil is tested with GC/MS, there are stock numbers on each label so we can refer to batch specific GC/MS reports, and the company knows when each batch was distilled (the season and year). There are many wonderful companies who do this, and a few I like are Aromatics International, Florihana and Essential Elements.

Using essential oils internally is a valid and effective route of application. However, in order to safely use this method, one has to have knowledge of pharmacology — specifically pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. (Pharmacodynamics is the therapeutic action of the essential oil once it enters the body, and you have to know essential oil chemistry in order to understand this action. Pharmacokinetics is how the body responds to the oil, how the oil is transformed and metabolized, and how the body uses the foreign substance – aka the essential oil – and finally eliminates it.) And of course, the potential toxicity and long-term effects must be considered by studying toxicology. Knowing essential oil chemistry, anatomy, and physiology is vital to understanding which oils to choose, appropriate dosage, and safety. At Aromahead, we teach topical use, inhalation, diffusion, and (when appropriate) neat use of the oils. All of these methods are well researched and if used correctly with proper respect for safety, dilution and dose, they are safe and very effective.

Have you signed up for our free Intro to Essential Oils course? It’s a great resource for basic information regarding essential oils, and I really think you’d enjoy it. You can learn more about it and sign up here: http://aromahead.com/courses/online/introduction-to-essential-oils

We also have a free webinar for massage therapists that may interest you too! You can find out more information and sign up here: http://www.onlinemeetingnow.com/register/?id=ulrjsc9ugd&

Hi Bette’ – It depends on what the issues are for her scalp, some people like shea butter for their scalp, others like coconut oil or jojoba. A tiny bit of any of those can be very nourishing.

She has already been to the Vet and been on prednisone and antibiotics but it just comes back. I don’t want to keep medicating her. Please help

Andrea, I just want to say how exciting and happy I am to find your site and read about the Aromahead Institute. I have spent the last month or so reading and studying about essential oils and essential oil companies. I happened upon your sight just a few days ago and have come back to it multiple times a day as a reference. I have a goal of becoming an aromatherapist because of the love and passion I have found for essential oils, as well as the many benefits I have discovered along my educational journey. I have spent many hours filtering through so much information about oils and about oil companies online and it was a breath of fresh air to come across this reputable site. I plan on purchasing your books, and eventually continuing my education through your institute just as soon as my husband gets off to medical school. Thank you for taking the time do make such education and learning accessible to all levels of financial situations.
