Finding Bergamot in Southern Italy

by Andrea on June 13, 2008

A trip in search of Bergamot in Southern Italy!

Happily, we learned of a wonderful Bergamot producer in the “toe” of Italy, in the region of Calabria. So after an enchanting two days in Rome, we flew to Calabria, and continued by car along the Mediterranean Sea on a beautiful, twisting road through the small towns and sweeping inland landscapes of Southern Italy.

We found Giuseppe–or rather, Giuseppe found us!–huddled in our chilly hotel room (the south of Italy is COLD in early January!). He and his sister took us to their farm, where we were greeted by the family pig and acres of lush Bergamot orchards.

With a lot of body language and laughter (very little English is spoken here, and we’re hopeless with Italian…), we learned about the process of abrasion and centrifugal extraction that creates Bergamot oil. We got to watch as each drop of essential oil came out of the pipes, and we grew more and more appreciative of the work and dedication Giuseppe–and all of the small essential oil farmers and producers–put in each day to provide the world with the beauty of these oils.

Winter is the perfect season for Bergamot and all of the citrus oils. They uplift our spirits, seeming to carry the scent of the sun with them! We’ve been filling our diffuser with Bergamot and Grapefruit frequently these days, and filling our senses with the joy of their aromas.

Here’s one of our favorite diffuser blends to bring a little more sunshine into your day:

5 drops Bergamot
5 drops Grapefruit
5 drops Orange

I LOVE Bergamot! It’s soft soothing aroma feels like a caring friend. So when I had an abscessed tooth recently I was happy to discover that one of my favorite oils/friends Bergamot can be used for infections of the mouth.1

I made a mouth rinse using Bergamot, Peppermint and Tea Tree which I combined with Sage tea, lemon juice and honey. 2 I also made a massage oil for around my neck, jaw and ear)

As I read with interest both of your blogs on Bergamot, “Finding Bergamot in Italy and The Wonders of Bergamot” it seemed like the producers had also added a touch of care and concern to their oil with their desires to control the quality of their product.

I immediately made up the diffuser blend (I live in one of the northern states) and the aroma of my caring friend will be another tool to nurse me back to health and vitality.

Thanks Bergamot and Aromahead.

Thanks so much for this. This might sound weird, but I spent the first couple of years of my teenage lifein Naples, then travelled around the world. Now I’m living in Australia, with my Chinese wife, and son we had whilst in Japan! Truly internationalized, eh? Anyway, I’ve been trying to rediscover the smells and tastes of my youth with some authentic Italian recipes like these, best I’ve found so far! Thanks again, I’ll see if I can add the feed to my google reader tonight, though my son usually does that for me!

Your story and images take me directly to Italy, a country which is rich in human spirit, culture and agriculture. I can just image that your experience was amazing. I look forward to more travels with Aromatics International!
Thanks for sharing your adventure and is there an image of the family pig?
Best regards,
