3 Ways to Use Peppermint Essential Oil (and 1 way not to)
Peppermint essential oil is a favorite for a lot of people, and that's no surprise.
Peppermint is energizing and helps us to leave behind old thought patterns and usher in clear, fresh energy.
Peppermint is also great at cleaning, cooling us down, and reducing inflammation. In this post, I want to share 3 ways to use Peppermint essential oil with you. I created these recipes for Aromahead's YouTube channel, and they've been so popular there that I want to share them here too.
1. The first is a simple-to-make Peppermint spritz.
The only ingredient you need for this is Peppermint hydrosol!
Peppermint hydrosol is created during the process of distilling Peppermint essential oil. When we distill the plant, we get two "products" the essential oil and the water-based portion of the distillate. That's the hydrosol.
Peppermint is all about making life easier. So this one spray can do a lot of things.
Just pour 2 oz (60 ml) of Peppermint hydrosol into a spray bottle, and you can use it as a cooling body spritz, a refreshing bathroom spray, a car spray, or even to avoid bugs. (Bugs really don't like the smell of Peppermint!)
2. Use Peppermint essential oil in a natural surface cleaner.
Sweet Siberian Mint Surface Cleaner
This one is made in a 16 oz (480 ml) spray bottle. Fill the bottle most of the way with water, and then add . . .
Dash of vinegar (about 1 tsp should do it!)
10 drops Peppermint essential oil (Mentha x piperita)
2 ml Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)
2 ml Siberian Fir essential oil (Abies sibirica)
Are you wondering how much essential oil is 2 ml?
I have the answer for you!
1 ml is approximately 25 drops, so 2 ml is about 50 drops.
When I'm working with large drop counts like this, I sometimes use a graduated cylinder to measure my essential oils by the ml. Peppermint gave me this tip so I don't have to sit there and count out 50 drops of oil.
3. Use Peppermint essential oil for pain relief.
This is one of Peppermint's favorite muscle massage oils to use for friends who are sore and achy from working out, sitting at the computer too long, or even from being sick. (As though being sick weren't bad enough, now you have to deal with achy muscles and joints? No thank you!)
Incense, Peppermint, and Spike Lavender Body Oil
1 oz (30 ml) Jojoba Wax (Simmondsia chinensis)
8 drops Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)
5 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
5 drops Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia)
Make this blend in a 1 oz (30 ml) bottle. Combine the jojoba and essential oils, shake the blend gently, and massage it into sore, tense areas as needed. I love this blend for tight shoulders and necks!
Peppermint essential oil has a few friends joining it for this blend . . .
There's Frankincense, which is a grounding oil we can use for feeling calm, reducing stress, and relaxing our muscles. Frankincense's rich "resinous" aroma is so unique, and it adds a balsamic layer to Peppermint's fresh scent.
The other oil in this blend is Spike Lavender, which is gentle on the skin and absolutely amazing for soothing sore muscles! (I love using this oil in sports massage blends). Its aroma is floral and camphoraceous (a little like Eucalyptus combined with Lavender).
And now for a final note . . . 1 way NOT to use Peppermint essential oil is in the bath.
Even a small amount in the bath can become too irritating, so I suggest choosing other oils for bath blends.
