A healing massage butter

One of my favorite natural carrier butters to use in body butter recipes for healing massage is kombo butter.

Kombo butter has a deep reddish-brown color, and a distinctive nutty, earthy aroma. Its consistency is thick and oily, with granule-like bits throughout that melt when it's warmed. It comes from West Central Africa and is often called "African Nutmeg."

It's good at soothing aching joints and sore muscles thanks to its high content of natural acids that reduce inflammation. I have known people who were so helped by this butter that they refused to leave home without their Kombo blend!

I'd like to share a recipe that might just become a  "don't leave home without it"   blend for you.

This makes about 8 oz (240 ml) of Feel Better Butter. You can make it in two 4 oz (120 ml) glass jars, or in four 2 oz (60 ml) glass jars.

Avo-Kombo Feel Better Butter

Soothe aching joints and sore muscles.

Ingredients
  • 3 fl oz (90 ml) Avocado Oil (Persea gratissima)

  • 2 fl oz (56 gm) Kombo Butter (Pycnanthus angolensis)

  • 1 oz (28 gm) Beeswax (Cera flava)

  • 1 ½ oz (42 gm) Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii)

  • ½ oz (14 gm) Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao)

Equipment
  • Two 4 oz glass jars, or four 2 oz glass jars.

Directions
  • Create a "double boiler" with a Pyrex measuring cup and a soup pot. Fill the soup pot about ¼ with water, and bring it to a gentle rolling boil. Put the Pyrex in the soup pot with the handle hanging over the side. That way it won't be too hot when it's time to pick it up.

  • Melt your beeswax in the Pyrex.

  • Add your cocoa butter and melt.

  • Add the kombo butter and avocado oil. Stir gently until the kombo is all melted.

  • Add the shea butter and stir gently until it's melted.

  • Remove the Pyrex from the heat and turn off the stove.

  • Pour your liquid butter into your jars. Let it cool for at least an hour before using it.

If you want to add essential oils, add them after the shea is melted (and before you pour the blend into your glass jars).

I suggest:

  • 30 drops Black Spruce Oil (Picea mariana)

  • 25 drops Juniper Berry Oil (Juniperus communis)

  • 25 drops Sugandha Kokila (Cinnamomum glaucescens)

  • 6 drops Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

I recommend using this blend if you're not wearing something white, or try dabbing off any excess butter from your skin so it doesn't get on your clothes.
